Sony Group’s operating income rose to 1.41 trillion yen in the year ended March 31, 2025
In Game & Network Services, customer sales of digital software and network services rose and hardware and others fell, in the unaudited summary Sony filed on May 14, 2025.
Sony Group reported operating income of 1.41 trillion yen for the year ended March 31, 2025, against 1.21 trillion yen a year earlier, in a Form 6-K, a report that a company based outside the US files with the SEC, filed on May 14, 2025. Sales and financial services revenue were 12.96 trillion yen, down from 13.02 trillion, and net income attributable to Sony Group’s stockholders was 1.14 trillion yen, up from 970.6 billion. The consolidated figures followed IFRS Accounting Standards and were unaudited.1,2,3,4,5
Game & Network Services, which the filing said covered network services, home gaming products and digital software and add-on content, had operating income of 414.8 billion yen, against 290.2 billion a year earlier. Its sales to outside customers were 4.54 trillion yen, against 4.17 trillion; counting sales to Sony’s other segments, the segment’s total was 4.67 trillion yen. Within the customer sales, digital software and add-on content brought in 2.29 trillion yen, against 1.93 trillion, and network services 669.9 billion yen, against 545.5 billion, while hardware and others fell to 1.58 trillion yen from 1.69 trillion. Sony said hardware and others included home gaming consoles, packaged software and peripheral devices, among other things. In the year’s last three months, the segment’s operating income was 92.7 billion yen, down from 106.0 billion, and hardware and others customer sales fell to 291.9 billion yen from 394.8 billion.6,7,8,9,10,11,12
For the year ending March 31, 2026, Sony forecast sales of 11,700 billion yen, operating income of 1,280 billion yen and net income attributable to stockholders of 930 billion yen for continuing operations (excluding the Financial Services business). Sony had not yet determined restated results for the year ended March 31, 2025 on that basis, so it compared the forecast with all segments excluding Financial Services: sales of 12,043.9 billion yen, operating income of 1,276.6 billion yen and net income attributable to stockholders of 1,067.4 billion yen, figures that are not IFRS measures. The operating income and net income forecasts reflected Sony’s estimate of the effect of U.S. tariff policy, and Sony said the actual effect could vary significantly if tariff policy or other factors changed.13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20
Sony said that at a board meeting on May 14, 2025 it decided to submit to the board, in early September 2025, a resolution to carry out a partial spin-off of Sony Financial Group Inc., its wholly owned financial services subsidiary, as of October 1, 2025. Sony planned to distribute slightly more than 80% of the subsidiary’s shares to its own shareholders as dividends in kind, that is, in the subsidiary’s shares rather than cash.21,22
