Sony reported operating income of ¥340.0 billion for the quarter to Jun 30, 2025, with its game segment at ¥148.0 billion
The operating figures left out the Financial Services business, which Sony treated as a discontinued operation ahead of a spin-off it planned for Oct 1, 2025.
On Aug 7, 2025, Sony Group filed a Form 6-K with its financial summary for the first quarter ended Jun 30, 2025, prepared under IFRS, the international accounting standards. A 6-K is a report that a foreign company files with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The statements were labelled unaudited, and the summary stated that certified public accountants or an audit firm did not review them.1,2,3,4,5,6,7
Sales from continuing operations were ¥2.62 trillion, against ¥2.57 trillion a year earlier, a rise of ¥56.3 billion. Including the discontinued business, net income attributable to Sony Group's stockholders was ¥236.9 billion, against ¥231.6 billion a year earlier. From continuing operations it was ¥259.0 billion against ¥210.2 billion, while discontinued operations moved from income of ¥21.5 billion to a loss of ¥22.1 billion. Sony's board decided on May 14, 2025 on a plan for a partial spin-off of Sony Financial Group Inc., the wholly owned subsidiary that runs the Financial Services business, as of Oct 1, 2025. Sony planned to submit a resolution to its board in early September 2025 and to distribute slightly more than 80% of the subsidiary's shares to Sony shareholders as dividends in kind, paid in the subsidiary's shares rather than cash. From the quarter to Jun 30, 2025, it classified that business as a discontinued operation, presented apart from continuing operations. For the fiscal year ending Mar 31, 2026, Sony's forecast that day, marked as revised, put continuing operations at sales of ¥11.7 trillion and operating income of ¥1.33 trillion. The operating income forecast reflected the estimated effect of changes in US tariff policy, calculated on rates announced as of Aug 1, 2025.17,18,19,20,21,22
The summary left its commentary on the results to a separate presentation, "Q1 FY2025 Consolidated Financial Results", published the same day. The 6-K was signed by Lin Tao, Sony's chief financial officer.23,24
