Sony Group reported on Aug 7, 2025 that its operating income from continuing operations was 340.0 bln yen in the three months ended June 30, 2025, the first quarter of FY2025, up 36% from 249.1 bln yen a year earlier. Sales were 2,621.6 bln yen, up 2%. Sony prints its yen totals in billions, which it abbreviates as bln yen, and filed the earnings presentation on a Form 6-K, the report a foreign private issuer, the SEC’s term for a qualifying non-US company, files with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.12345

Net income attributable to Sony Group’s stockholders from continuing operations was 259.0 bln yen, up 23% from 210.2 bln yen. Under IFRS, Sony treated its Financial Services business as a discontinued operation from this quarter, so these figures leave it out, and it re-presented the year-earlier quarter on the same basis. Sony said it planned a partial spin-off of Sony Financial Group, the subsidiary that operates that business, in October 2025.64789

In Game & Network Services, operating income was 148.0 bln yen against 65.2 bln yen a year earlier, a rise of 127%, on sales of 936.5 bln yen, which Sony records before intersegment transactions are eliminated. Sony credited higher sales of non-first-party game software, add-on content included, and of network services, and said exchange rates weighed on sales. It also said that monthly active users in June and total gameplay hours across PlayStation in the quarter each rose 6% from a year earlier; Sony defines monthly active users as an estimate of the unique accounts that played games or used services on PlayStation Network in the last month of the quarter.101112131415

Sony’s forecast for continuing operations on Aug 7 put FY2025 operating income, after an estimated tariff impact, at 1,330 bln yen, 50 bln yen above its May forecast of 1,280 bln yen. It estimated the tariff impact at about 70 bln yen, based on tariff rates announced as of Aug 1, 2025, which was 30 bln yen less than in its previous forecast. Before the tariff impact, Sony put the forecast at 1,400 bln yen, 20 bln yen above its May forecast, and credited the increase to Game & Network Services. For that segment it cited network services and exchange rates as positives and a delay in the launch of a first-party title as a negative.1617118192021
